Frequently Asked Questions

There are tons of other websites where I can sell my stuff. What's so different about ubcbook?
The main feature of ubcbook is that you can type in your department and course number to get a list of the books your class requires, and ubcbook finds everyone who is selling those books for you.
Secondly, ubcbook is more than just a place to buy and sell stuff. There's also a forum where you can discuss anything that concerns UBC students, or ask questions and easily get answers from other UBC students.
Thirdly, unlike some other classified advertising websites, you do not have to provide personal contact information such as e-mail addresses or phone numbers for other users to contact you. You can do all your communication easily through the ubcbook notification/messaging system.
Also, soon there will be ubcbook blogs as well.

I keep seeing links such as "Make offer" or "Accept offer". What's the difference between using those and just sending a message?
When you make offers, they are stored in a database so that when something happens such as the seller selling the item to someone else, you are automatically notified of the situation, so that the seller does not have to inform every single person who has made an offer separately.
The same thing happens when someone deletes a listing or an offer. Also, the offers database makes it possible to keep track of the highest offers.

You're also a UBC student. How can I trust you with my password?
Well, you don't really give us your password when you register. All paswords are encrypted with MD5 hashes, which is irreversible encryption. Therefore no one will know your password, or be able to log in with your account.

There are all these little "L" signs next to book titles. What are those?
They're little links that find you that book at the UBC Library website.
-
When I delete a message, is it completely deleted?
Not exactly. When you delete a message, you can't see that anymore, however the person that you sent it to (or recieved it from) can still see it, if they haven't deleted it yet.
-
When I rate another user, is there a way they can see what I rated them?
No. I would never add such a feature.
-
Can I swear in the forum?
Sorry, no.
Well, maybe. Only if you're creative enough.Seriously though, excessive profanity is not allowed.
- This website sucks. I would have done so much better.
